Balancing School and Home

Making It Through Your First Year of Nursing School

The day had finally come!!!

I got my acceptance letter to nursing school and I thought that was going to be the hardest part. Little did I know, the hardest days in school were yet to come. There are many things you learn while in nursing school. Looking back there are some things that I was told to do or not do but took too lightly that I wish I wouldn't have.

During my fiirst semester I worked part-time; two 12 hour overnight shifts a week.. I studied by myself or with one other person. I crammed for tests the night or two nights before. I never read or retained anything from lecture. There are many, many more things I did wrong my first semester that I wish I new better.

Second semester, I worked the same amount of hours as my first semester until half way through, and then I cut down even more at work. I never worked the weekend before a test. I joined a study group. I read the chapters we were covering in class multiple times. I always, always went to class and paid attention during lecture.
