Before I got into nursing school people who were nurses would always ask me “Have you heard of care plans? Just wait until you have to do care plans….” Then they would chuckle the chuckle of those who have done care plans and never have to do them again.
I am now intimately familiar with care plans and I have a love-hate relationship with them. They help me learn nursing process and allow me to apply knowledge gained in lecture but they take forever and sometimes can seem a little pointless. There are some things that have helped me to make care plans the best I can.
Tips for writing a successful care plan:
Do what your teacher wants. Follow the template your teacher wants. If your teacher wants things presented in a certain way, do it.
Pick a complex patient. This will cause you to stretch yourself, expose yourself to new experiences and conditions, and learn things you didn’t know before. Preferably, pick a patient whose disorder has something to do with what you’re learning about in class. This will give you a chance to...
