On Demand Training • | Personal Devices Elsevier Secure Browser Faculty Guide: Student Testing on Mac or Windows Devices This faculty readiness guide outlines the key steps and information faculty need to know about installing or running the secure browser on Mac or Windows devices. Secure Browser Installation To ensure testing devices are sufficiently prepared for your students’ HESI exams, the Elsevier Secure Browser must be installed and the compatibility check must be run successfully on the appropriate testing devices. Faculty who are proctoring their students’ HESI exams will not need to download the secure browser on the devices they will use to proctor exams. The secure browser only needs to be installed on the devices used for test-taking. If your test-takers will be installing the secure browser on institution-owned Mac or Windows devices, follow the steps below. 1. Have testers download and run the HESI Compatibility Check in advance of their exam to complete the initial secure browser download and ensure system compatibility, by clicking the “Compatibility Check” link in the menu on the left side of the homepage in the HESI NG course. This is the verified access point and must be used by testers to successfully run the compatibility check and mock exam in the secure browser. Note: If they receive an error using this link, have your testers clear the cache or paste into an incognito browser. Ensure all testers first review the system requirements for their device (Mac or Windows). If testers do not run the Compatibility Check and mock exam in advance, it could take up to 2 minutes for the secure browser to load, or they may run into unexpected issues that can cause unneeded stress on test day. These issues can be proactively resolved if testers complete this check to download the browser in advance. If testers encounter any technical issues downloading or launching the secure browser, first try the troubleshooting steps included in the Elsevier Secure Browser Faculty Training. 2. Students will see the following instructions before they enter the secure browser: Windows Mac 3. The first time a tester downloads the secure browser, they will click the link in Step 1 to download the application. Note: It may take up to a minute (dependent on network speed). 4. Once the application has been downloaded to a device, students will return to the instructions page and hit “Begin.” This will open the exam in the secure browser. 5. The secure browser will then close or hide any prohibited applications and lock down the tester’s device. 6. Each subsequent time they use the compatibility check or launch an exam, they can just hit “Begin” – the download only happens once. To help prepare your test-takers with downloading the Elsevier Secure Browser on their devices, share the Elsevier Secure Browser Student Training. Test Day Preparation On test day, ensure testers have all apps not needed for testing closed, and they are not screen sharing or trying to use multiple monitors. As a best practice: 1. Have students restart their computers just before testing in order to start with a “clean” device. 2. If they are using their personal devices, ask students to arrive with their devices fully charged. We highly recommend testers connect to a power source while testing if they have a device with an older battery.
