On Demand Training • | Personal Devices Elsevier Secure Browser Faculty Guide: Student Testing on Mac or Windows Devices This faculty readiness guide outlines the key steps and information faculty need to know about installing or running the secure browser on Mac or Windows devices. Secure Browser Installation To ensure testing devices are sufficiently prepared for your students’ HESI exams, the Elsevier Secure Browser must be installed and the compatibility check must be run successfully on the appropriate testing devices. Faculty who are proctoring their students’ HESI exams will not need to download the secure browser on the devices they will use to proctor exams. The secure browser only needs to be installed on the devices used for test-taking. If your test-takers will be installing the secure browser on institution-owned Mac or Windows devices, follow the steps below. 1. Have testers click the “Compatibility Check” link in the left menu of the HESI NG course homepage to download the secure browser and verify system compatibility before their exam. This is the official access point and must be used for both the compatibility check and mock exam. If testers do not run the Compatibility Check and mock exam in advance, they may run into unexpected issues or delays that can cause unnecessary stress on test day. If testers encounter any technical issues downloading or launching the secure browser, first try the troubleshooting steps included in the Elsevier Secure Browser faculty training guide. 2. Students will see these instructions before they enter the secure browser: When they click “Check compatibility” the system will check to see if the secure browser is already installed. If so, they will be prompted to open the secure browser with a pop-up window. If they are not immediately prompted to open the secure browser, they will follow the instructions to download it. Note: Downloading may take up to a minute (dependent on network speed). Windows users will download and open the .app file and go through the setup wizard. They will receive a success message that it is set up, and must click “Okay” to continue. Once installed, they will come back to the instructions screen, refresh the screen, and click “Check system and begin” again. Mac users will download and open the .dmg file and drag it to their desktop. Once installed, they will come back to the instructions screen, refresh the screen, and click “Check system and begin” again. Once the secure browser is opened, it will close or hide any prohibited applications and lock down the tester’s device. To help prepare your test-takers with downloading the Elsevier Secure Browser on their devices, share the Elsevier Secure Browser Student Training. Test Day Preparation On test day, ensure testers have all apps not needed for testing closed, and they are not screen sharing or trying to use multiple monitors. As a best practice: 1. Have students restart their computers just before testing in order to start with a “clean” device. 2. If they are using their personal devices, ask students to arrive with their devices fully charged. We highly recommend testers connect to a power source while testing if they have a device with an older battery.
